Our Vision
BIOU aspires to be a leading university in the Middle East, distinguished by academic excellence and intellectual integrity and to serve as a spiritual point of contact.
Rooted in the Orthodox Christian tradition and committed to open inquiry, BIOU prepares graduates of moral character, critical insight, and professional excellence who are equipped to engage the challenges of contemporary society with wisdom and principled leadership.
Our Mission
BIOU is dedicated to the pursuit, preservation, and communication of knowledge across the humanities, social sciences, theology, and cultural studies. The university fosters rigorous scholarship, free inquiry, and the formation of character within a vibrant academic community.
Through deep engagement with the Orthodox Christian intellectual, theological, historical, and spiritual tradition, BIOU contributes to regional and global scholarly dialogue while cultivating graduates capable of thoughtful leadership, ethical responsibility, and service to society.
Location of Significance
BIOU is located at Al-Maghtas in Jordan, the UNESCO-recognized Baptism Site of Jesus Christ; one of the most sacred locations in Christian history. This unique setting connects the University’s academic mission to a place of profound spiritual, historical, and cultural significance shared across Christian traditions worldwide.
BIOU facilities lie at the exact location where Jesus Christ, after being baptized by John the Baptist, spent forty (40) days in the Desert. This period, which immediately preceded his public ministry, represents a time of preparation, spiritual strengthening, and triumph over temptation.
Interdisciplinary Academic Model
BIOU’s programs integrate theology, philosophy, law, and languages within a single academic framework.
This approach provides graduates with substantive knowledge of the Orthodox tradition alongside the analytical and professional competencies required in contemporary academic, clerical, and civic contexts.
A Meeting Point of Christian Orthodoxy and Islam
Jordan maintains a recognized tradition of religious moderation and interfaith stability. BIOU builds on this context by incorporating the study of Christian–Islamic relations and serves as an interlocutor of understanding and communicating the two traditions.
A dialectic approach is incorporated in all of its programs.
International Academic Standards
BIOU’s academic programs are developed in accordance with internationally recognized higher education standards, including transferable credit systems and global equivalency frameworks. Through hybrid-flexible delivery models, the University serves students in Jordan, the wider Arab region, the global diaspora, and international partner institutions, making Orthodox higher education accessible to diverse communities worldwide.
An Open Institution for Students Around the World
BIOU aspires to welcome students from diverse countries and cultural backgrounds across the globe. English serves as the language of instruction as well as the primary language for all administrative communication. Every program is thoughtfully designed, from its teaching methodology to its support services, to meet the needs of an international student community. At the heart of the institution is a vibrant multicultural environment that fosters interaction, collaboration, and exchange among students of many different nationalities.
